DOE launched a joint effort with DHS, HUD, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to spend more than $12 billion in federal funds to rebuild and modernize Puerto Rico’s electrical grid with a focus on strengthening resilience and increasing access to affordable, clean energy. The effort kicked off with the two-year PR100 Study to assess potential pathways to achieve 100% renewable energy.
On Feb. 7, 2024, DOE and FEMA released a summary report for the Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100). The study concluded that Puerto Rico is capable of meeting projected electricity needs with 100% renewable energy by 2050, incorporating implementation of the Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund which focuses on developing the electrical grid in Puerto Rico’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.
