The Biden-Harris administration created a new Voluntary Community-Driven Relocation program, led by the Department of Interior (DOI), to assist tribal communities severely impacted by climate-related environmental threats. FEMA will provide additional support, along with the Denali Commission. The program provides $115 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act to eleven severely impacted tribes to help with adaptation planning and relocation efforts. FEMA continues to provide mitigation grant funds beyond this program to support relocations (including the Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants and the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Community grant program).

This program is part of a larger effort taken by the Community-Driven Relocation Subcommittee within the White House National Climate Task force that was launched in August 2022.  The subcommittee is co-led by FEMA and DOI.
