HUD announced the release of its Extreme Heat Playbook, which was created to help minimize the impacts of extreme heat in communities. The playbook was intended to establish long term resilience in the face of extreme here, with goals of highlighting the urgency of building resilience, empowering communities to assess strengths and vulnerabilities, provide actionable steps for planning and implementing mitigation measures, support continuous reevaluation of community needs, and prioritizing equity to protect the most vulnerable populations. The Extreme Heat Playbook aligns with the National Heat Strategy and builds on HUD’s Extreme Heat Quick Guide, and is part of HUD’s broader commitment to environmental justice.
