President Biden signed an Executive Order directing the National Parks Service to identify women and girls from American history that could be recognized in existing historic sites. The review includes an assessment of existing and possible new historic sites that could better recognize the contributions of women in American history. The review will look across a range of historical periods and subjects, including “women and girl leaders in advocacy and social movements, defense, diplomacy, education, law, medicine, the sciences, conservation and environmental protection, sports, the arts, or other professions and disciplines,” and “shall reflect diversity in factors such as gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, Tribal affiliation, disability, age, geography, income, and socioeconomic status.” Read Secretary Haaland’s response.
