DOE announced the creation of the Tribal Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Working Group. The Working Group was made up of “eight federally recognized Tribes with significant fossil energy reserves and reliance on revenue from those resources” and was created to advise DOE on the best ways to support Tribal decarbonization efforts and Tribes’ use of their natural resources. DOE was expected to provide technical assistance and capacity building to Tribes to undertake projects including carbon capture, methane mitigation, mineral production and processing, and repurposing fossil fuel plants scheduled for retirement.
