Proposed Rule

EPA issued a proposed rule to restrict the use of 1-Bromopropane in commercial products and industrial workplaces. EPA determined that the chemical compound posed an unreasonable risk to health, including causing various forms of cancer. 1-Bromopropane is used in a wide range of household products and industrial manufacturing, and the proposed rule would greatly limit those uses to only one consumer use and would impose strict workplace protections for industrial use. Comments on the proposed rule were due by Sep. 23, 2024

The proposed rule built upon EPA’s Jan. 4, 2022 announcement of the addition of a new chemical, 1-bromopropane (1-BP), a suspected carcinogen, to the Clean Air Act’s air toxics list for the first time since the list was created in 1990. EPA was previously petitioned to add BP-1 to the toxics list. While comments were taken during public review, EPA determined that there is no additional need for public review for the final rule for amending the Clean Air Act toxics list to include BP-1. The agency was expected to release a plan for examining the risks posed to fenceline communities located near factories and other sources in early 2022.
