EPA released updated interim guidance on the destruction and disposal of PFAS and PFAS-containing materials to reflect the latest and best available science. The guidance recommends that decision-makers prioritize the use of technologies that have the lowest potential for environmental release in order to protect people and communities from PFAs exposure. The guidance further emphasizes the use of EPA’s tools for identifying and prioritizing communities near destruction and disposal sites, and those overburdened by pollution. The new guidance incorporates public comments from EPA’s 2020 interim guidance and identifies key gaps and uncertainties in ongoing research regarding efficient destruction of PFAS. The guidance is part of EPA’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap.
EPA is seeking comments on the guidance until Oct. 15, 2024. Submit comments online at regulations.gov using Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OLEM-2020-0527.
