EPA’s Office of Inspector General released a report finding that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed a need for additional tribal drinking water assistance and oversight in EPA Regions 9 and 10. Between the two regions, EPA oversees almost 300 community drinking water systems on Tribal lands with 142 federally recognized tribes within the states of Alaska, Arizona, and California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. Pandemic-related challenges have impacted tribal drinking water operations as staff have struggled to maintain operations. The pandemic limited technical and compliance assistance, the ability to conduct sanitary surveys and inspections, and the ability to address previously identified concerns. The report recommended better training, technical and financial support, sanitary surveys, and incorporating lessons learned from the pandemic into tribal drinking water systems.
