EPA’s Methane Rulemaking Timeline

EPA is in the process of promulgating three methane emissions rules:

  1. The 2022 Supplemental Methane Proposal for the oil and gas sector (Section 111 Methane Rule), which is anticipated to be final this November, and incorporates comments received about EPA’s 2021 proposed rules;
  2. Proposed changes to Subpart W of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program to support the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act’s reporting requirements;
  3. Anticipated proposal to implement the methane waste emissions fees of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Below is an estimated timeline to highlight how the three rulemakings align.
