The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released its Environmental Justice Index (EJI)–the first national tool to map cumulative environmental burdens through the lens of human health and health equity. The EJI uses data from the Census Bureau, EPA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to measure and rank the cumulative impacts of environmental burdens at the census tract-level based on 36 factors, including transportation infrastructure, pollutant exposure, preexisting health conditions, walkability, race, and housing type. The tool provides a single score for each census tract, which public health officials can then use to identify areas that are most at-risk for health impacts from pollution and other poor environmental conditions.
