On July 6, 2026, EPA issued draft guidance for how to mitigate risks from PFOA and PFOS in sewage sludge and biosolids. The agency departed from a draft risk assessment published under the Biden administration, which identified potential risk to 1) those living on or near farm land where PFOA or PFOS containing biosolids were applied to the land or disposed of via surface disposal and 2) those relying on products from such farm land. In its July 2026 draft guidance, EPA encouraged the use of land application of biosolids, and stated the Biden draft risk assessment did not properly assess risk to the public.
