EPA published a new online resource guide to help educate the public about heavy metals in “cultural products.” Cultural products—like cosmetics, religious powders, and cookware, among others—can contain heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium and exposure to these products can increase the risk of developing long-term health problems. Children and those who are pregnant are especially vulnerable to heavy metals. The release fulfills a promise EPA made in its 2022 Strategy to Reduce Lead Exposures and Disparities in U.S. Communities for reducing lead exposure in communities overburdened by pollution. The online resource guide connects the public to local, state, and federal resources regarding preventing heavy metal exposure from cultural products.
