HUD and USDA adopted new energy efficiency standards for new, federally funded affordable housing. The agencies adopted the new International Energy Conservation Code standard for home and small multifamily buildings, which is 34 percent more efficient than the current standard in use. HUD anticipated that the change will affect 150,000 new units per year. HUD and USDA are required to periodically review and revise their energy standards under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.
