On May 23, 2025, EPA did not renew its lease for an air pollution research facility in Chapel Hill, NC, effectively closing the facility. Public health researchers explained this facility was specially designed to better understand the effects of air pollution and many major air regulations are based on the research completed there. While other universities or research groups may decide to use the space instead, EPA decided it no longer needed to fund or support this research.
