EELP Legal Fellow
Harvard Law School’s Environmental and Energy Law Program (EELP) is seeking a Legal Fellow for the academic year 2020-2021 with the potential to renew. The fellowship is a full-time, internally funded position in Cambridge, Massachusetts beginning in August 2020. The Fellow will work on current projects, including ongoing activities to environmental and energy regulatory developments and changes to practices of the Environmental Protection Agency. The Fellow will also develop new projects, both independently and collaboratively with EELP colleagues, to address legal issues that arise from regulatory changes and actions aimed at addressing environmental challenges.
About EELP
EELP works to promote informed decision-making for a sustainable future by analyzing legal aspects of real-world environmental and energy challenges grounded in today’s political realities. The program tracks and analyzes federal regulatory processes, litigation, executive actions, and state policy, assessing the progress made towards clean energy, environmental protection, and better public health outcomes. EELP’s current portfolios cover the following issue areas: environmental governance, electricity law and policy, private sector governance and innovation, and state and local climate strategies.
Fellowship Duties & Responsibilities
The Fellow will work closely with the Executive Director, collaborate with EELP staff, and supervise HLS student research assistants. The Fellow can expect occasional interactions with, and assignments from, the program’s faculty directors. The Fellow may be asked to coordinate informal events for EELP research assistants and HLS students.
The majority of the Fellow’s work will be researching and writing white papers, blog posts, and occasionally, lengthier articles for academic law journals or external publications. The Fellow may also work on other communications products, such as podcast episodes and presentations. Research topics will include a variety of environmental and climate issues, and the Fellow will be encouraged to pursue research and writing on topics that interest them.
The Fellow can expect to interact with practitioners, stakeholders, and academics active in relevant legal and policy areas. The Fellow may also be asked to respond to press inquiries. Some evening and weekend work may be required from time to time.
Qualifications
This Fellowship is open to recent law school graduates with a JD earned between 2017-2020. Applicants should have experience with environmental law and demonstrate an interest in deepening their knowledge of the field. Applicants should demonstrate a strong sense of initiative and excellent legal research and writing skills for specialist and general audiences.
EELP has a welcoming, collegial culture that values teamwork and a balance between optimism and realism. Applicants must be able to work effectively on collaborative projects.
